Clinical Hours

Each internship gives one "unit" of CPE. Each unit requires 300 hours of clinical work. Our interns get these hours through time spent on their clinical unit throughout the week, and their time working as the on-call chaplain in 12-hour shifts throughout their CPE unit.

Education

Once a week, sit down with the other interns and your educators for seminars, learning sessions, and to discuss your experiences providing spiritual care to patients and staff. Our educators are specially trained to provide feedback and guide discussions in education to grow each of our students as caregivers.

Individual Supervision

Spend time one-on-one with your educator each week to discuss your experiences on the units and with our team as you learn and are challenged in your skills.

Information

Thank you for your interest in applying to train with us. The CPE application is designed to help us get a sense of who you are, your life journey, who has influenced you, your strengths and weaknesses, and your interest in CPE, and what you would like to learn about yourself as a spiritual care provider from CPE.

You will need to gather the following information and documents in order to complete the application. We highly recommend that you gather materials that might help you answer the following prior to starting the application.*

  • A reasonably full account of your life (1500 words or more)
  • A description of any social, cultural, or religious/spiritual influences upon you which have been significant in your life (1000 words or more)
  • Explanation of recent circumstances which have encouraged you to apply for this education and training (500 words or more)
  • Your understanding or expectations of CPE and what you wish to happen in this learning experience. List your strengths and weaknesses, as you understand them at this time, for entering a CPE program (250 words or more)
  • Briefly describe an incident in which you provided a spiritual care response to a family or a person experiencing a crisis (500 words or more)
  • What experiences have resulted in you learning the most about yourself, both strength and growing edges

*Please note that we have provided word counts as guides for you to give us sufficient information to get to know you. In most instances, a paragraph is not sufficient.

  • Names of two references with contact info, one from a faith group, and one academic
  • Resume
  • Applicants with previous CPE experience:
    • Final copy of your CPE Evaluation(s)
    • Final copy of your CPE Supervisors' Evaluation(s)
    • A recent (within two years) verbatim of a spiritual care encounter
